This is an issue that probably deserves to be read a few times to discern everything that’s going on.  I do not have time for that tonight/this morning.  On first read through, it’s…good.  It appears to be Hickman’s philosophy statement on The Marvel Universe.  A “here’s a stage setting for all my other science based stories’.

I mistakenly picked up the black and white variant, initially.  I then went back and picked up the color, and looked back and forth between them.  I recommend you do this to.  Both versions are gorgeous.  Hickman and Weaver’s pencils are goddamnedfuckenmesmerizing.  And the coloring does not detract from that.  I’m considering buying both of them so I can spend more time comparing them.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. Story is only worth a three?!

  2. @robbydzwonar: A 3 is good.  I didn’t love the story, but it wasn’t as good as the art.

  3. I totally agree with the rating in this review. Story is a 3, art is a 5.

  4. Agree with you as well.  Hickman’s writing is nothing short of dense, and I feel a bit perplexed by some of what he wrote.  I also know that he’s a guy that can bring a big payoff with the things he plants in his stories.  I’m intrigue enough to pick up the next issue.

  5. @VelcroKing: Thanks!

@Neb: I do enjoy Hickman’s work most of the time.  The Nightly News is my all-time favorite limited series.  I think I’ve sold, on average, five copies of the trade per month since it was released.  And his F4 stuff, is usually spot on for me, too.  I have faith I’ll enjoy this more as it goes on.

  6. Have you re-read it? You have to take your time and enjoy it. Every panel as it life. The black and white variant is mind blowing, you can clearly see every line Dustin made. I literally can’t stop staring at it. Its sitting next to my computer as I write this. I think I’m gonna re-read it right now.

  7. Oh, yea, Rockingeek, the art on the black and white is why I gave it the five.  I mean, the regular version is a solid 5, but the black and white is easily a 7.5 or an 8 on a five star scale.
