While I initially loved Immonen’s takeover of Runaways, it just hasn’t been grabbing me for the last two or three issues.  The fabled Return of Gert (it’s not a spoiler, she’s on the cover) isn’t so much a Wow as a Huh, Really?  And the plot just seems to be tripping over itself, trying to get out.  It’s not bad.  It’s just not reaching the potential that Immomen set up.  Which is a shame.

Visually, I don’t like the way the characters look here.  It’s been fairly mangaa-esque for a while now, but it really hit me in this issue how little the look seems to balance with the characters for me.  The Runaways are not “kawaii”, they are a bunch of orphans who had to kill their parents, and who are now on the run.  They should look shaggy, not glossy.

  1. I haven’t picked it up yet, I do intend to, but your critisms of this issue sum up the last 14 issues. The series has felt like the OC.

These kids have lived through some horribles things, but they play X-box and shop for cloths at the mall like their lives are normal (yet complain that they aren’t normal).

I’d have liked to see a creator push this book in a big way, like give them a big bad (not related to the Pride) chase them, forcing them to RUNAWAY again, rather than having them sit in a beach house chillin’. I think Marvel underestimated the fans of this book, and rather than giving us a deep, smart, story with these characters, they gave us standalone plot after stand alone plot.

It sounds like you think this is a disappointing end to a once great series.

  2. Ever since this creative team was announced they’ve see hellbent on bringing Gert back. Why? I know she’s a fan favorite, but BKV killed her off for a reason. While I know that others can do things to other people’s creations (it is comics and it happens a lot), but I fell that this is just too soon for Gert.
