Lots of writers have tried to carry on like Baum, pretending that they’re relating REAL events going on there.  Some were fairly successful, and others totally failed.  Commercially and artistically.  You could fill a bunch of warehouses with all the books, movies, toys, comics, games, and other Oz crap that’s been produced.  Most of it sucks.  But some people just can’t stop playing around with Oz.

On the inside cover that author manages to sum up rather nicely why I was afraid of this book.  I’m already enjoying Marvel’s interpretation of Oz, do I really need Slave Labor Graphics version?  Have I learned nothing from all those horrible Alice in Wonderland adaptations that come out every week?  Yes.  And no.

This is not some retelling of a Baum story.  This is the story of a kid whose father has taken upon himself to write new Oz stories.  Terrible, terrible Oz stories.  He can’t pay the bills, he can’t get respect, but he keeps churning out Oz story after Oz story, much to the embarrassment of his son.  Until, of course, something significant happens.

This was a really promising story, and has me absolutely amped to see where they take it.  It takes a lot for a black and white indie comic to excite me   And this one does.
