This series is nearing its wrap-up and issue 16 is a great penultimate issue.  Not one, not two, but three major characters buy the farm and a fourth looks to be in a no-win scenario.  And with the way this book has gone over its history, there are no expectations for how it will end.  While there aren’t really any mysteries cleared up, the ending is appropriately gruesome and very reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade; the final page by Juan Ferreya both shocks and leaves the reader feeling hopeless.  The only thing that was missing was the traditional newspaper front page at the end; I’ve always loved this part and the way it fleshed out the backstory of the world.  Arvid Nelson has crafted an amazing story over the years, and it looks to be a great inclusion in the collection of Grail lore and the genre of alternatative history.  Check it out in trades if you have not been reading this, as it’s been one of the best books coming out from Dark Horse.

  1. I agree – I read the first few trades, and I thought that they were outstanding. At some point I intend to read the rest of the trades. It is not at all clear to me why this book has not been more popular.

  2. The book has had some issues- there were delays when they changed artists, the switch from Image to Dark Horse probably lost some people, and the title doesn’t immediately tell you what’s going on.  Also, it’s been unfairly compared to DaVinci Code, so some people may look at it as unoriginal derivative and others who didn’t like that book don’t think they’d like this.  And it’s an indie, so it has a lot of strike against it.  But, yeah, it’s a great story overall.  Glad you’re liking it, and definitely get the rest of the trades (if they’re still in print anyway)!
