I was looking at my pull list and I saw that Reed Gunther #9 had only 21 pulls. WHAT THE HELL?!
Reed Gunther is the best all ages comic on the market right now. Every issue has always made me laugh out loud at least twice. Issue number 6 was, with no doubt, one of the best issues of 2011. And still seems that a lot of people don’t know this title at all.
Let me get this straight: Reed Gunther is the story of a Cowboy with big mustaches named Reed Gunther, his best bear-friend Sterling, and his friend/girlfriend Starla. All these characters are likeable and relatable. In this comic you can find monsters, western jokes, gunfights, great supportive characters and some moving moments too (issue #6 almost made me cry).
Every month the script is excellent and the art always delivers. The Houghton brothers really know what they are doing.
Reed Gunther #9 is no exception. The story is wonderful with a great twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. Chris Houghton’s art is, as always, simple and amazing. Plus this issue is a perfect jumping on point.
This is an all ages comic which doesn’t mean that it is for children and for men with the Peter Pan Syndrome. It means that it is for ALL AGES. I think that everybody should read it. The first trade just came out, and all the issues are available digitally. You should really give it a shot!
(I am italian. Sorry for my english and if there is any mistake)

  1. Sounds awesome. Thanks for the heads up.

  2. Thanks for the great review Edo! Shane Houghton here, the writer of Reed Gunther. Although I’d love to tell you that Reed Gunther is hilarious, adventurous, and kinda spooky, I definitely won’t because I’m biased… but it totally is.

If anyone has any questions about the series, please feel free to ask away!

    • I’ve never read this series but I want to so I’m going to pick up the trade. But, does the bear talk? Because if he did that would be pretty awesome…

    • Sterling the bear does not talk with words, but his facial expressions and reactions are to die for. Chris the artist is a master of creating hilarious dead-pan looks for Sterling.

Although, one time in issue #4, Reed Gunther has a fever dream in New York City after he accidentally moons a crowd of women and children. In the dream Sterling talks like Teddy Roosevelt. But that’s only for a page.

Comixology has REED GUNTHER #1 for FREE if you’d like to start there! Just know that we originally self-published that issue almost 3 years ago and we’ve gotten a lot better since then. Our master class work definitely starts in issue #6 and on.

    • Even though the Sterling doesn’t talk, it still sounds like he is a fun character. Can’t wait to check it out. Been hearing a lot of good stuff about the series, but I guess I wanted to wait until the trade to catch up on it. Looks awesome and a hell of a lot of fun. Going to check out the first issue right now.

    • Nothing wrong with waiting for the trade! Thanks for checking it out and I hope you enjoy the adventures!

    • Dear Shane, I just wanted to tell you that I love the characters you and Chris have created. I am deep in love for the world of Reed Gunther. I can say, with no doubt, that this series is one of my personal favourites. I also wanted to thank you a lot for commenting on my review. I wasn’t expecting this. Thank you very much!!
There’s only a couple of questions that comes in my mind right now: how long have you planned the series so far? Do you have some kind of ending in mind for Reed Gunther?
Thank you again for reading and commenting my review!

    • Thanks for the terrific review Edo! Fans like yourself are really what help indie books keep going!

As for how long we’re going, Reed Gunther is going to end momentarily after the 10th issue. Both Chris and I have lots of work on our plate right now and need to take a little break. We’ve been monthly ever since we launched and issue #10 is unfortunately going to be our first late issue. We know how important it is to keep comics on time, so instead of soliciting a bunch of issues we know will be late, we’re going to take a hiatus.

This does not mean that Reed Gunther is finished, canceled, or abandoned! We’re definitely coming back.

We don’t currently have an end story in mind for the series, but we do have a million story ideas so that’ll keep us going!

Issue 10 will have a satisfying end to prepare you for the hiatus, but the big story is definitely not over.

    • If not for the scouring the internet, I would have never found out that there will be a hiatus, although I’m sure issue 10 would let me know at the end. Hope you guys drink plenty of sarsaparilla and get those creative juices flowing for more issues! Until then I will keep reading the first 10 issues.
