Yost’s Red Robin was my favorite run in the Batman Reborn era.  I thought he wrote the most consistent twelve issue story arc, and I was sorry to see him go, and very worried to see Nicieza take over.  He’s not my least favorite writer to work on Batman, but I can’t think of any titles he’s taken over that I thought improved with his presence.  While I don’t think this issue in an improvement over Yost’s, it also didn’t feel like a step down.

Part of the reason, I think, that this still felt like part of the Yost story is that Marcus To continues on as penciller.  Also, I thought Nicienza did an admirable job of handling Yost’s “Daredevil Handoff”.

The “Daredevil Handoff” is when a writer leaves a book, and in the last issue throws a giant wrench in the gears of the story.  Bendis did it to Brubaker when he threw Matt Murdock in jail during his last issue of the run.  And when it was Brubaker’s turn to hand the book over to Diggle, he used the last issue to put Murdock in charge of The Hand.

At the end of his last issue of Red Robin, Yost showed us a newpaper announcing Tim Drake Wayne’s engagement to Tam Fox.  Nicienza deals with it right away, and makes it feel natural, and not like either a dodge, or a huge change in the status quo.

I’m also intrigued by what appears to be Drake’s next big project.

  1. Is this a phrase that you’ve coined or is it one that’s used by others?

    It’s great either way.

  2. Came up with it while I was writing this article.

  3. OMG. You are so f’n smart!

  4. Maybe it should be the ‘Daredevil reach-around’?

  5. That’s something else entirely.  It sounds like it would involve chafing.

  6. I really would like to jump into some Daredevil but the first Bendis Omni has a really fat price tag on it, I must admit.  Way past what I pay for comics…

  7. @robbydzwonar: They’r reprinting all the Smith/Mack/Bendis run (as well as the Frank Miller) in softcover trades.  I definitely reccomend starting with the Smith run (Guardian Devil) and reading from there to see if you WANT the entire Brubaker run.

  8. And, by Brubaker, I meant Bendis.  Though, y’know, eventually it becomes Brubaker.
