It takes a lot to make me care about a zombie story. I never got into Walking Dead, and the sea of zombie movies is so vast that, unless it does some really clever twist — like Fido — then I get bored. But Riley Rossmo and Alex Link have my undivided attention. There’s no real twist here. They haven’t reinvented the genre; these are your usual hostile, growling beasties with weird flesh-sacs growing out of them. What grabs you is the way they tell that story. It’s nonlinear: there are a lot of flashbacks, fantasy sequences, characters from one moment in time narrating over another. It took me a second read to grasp the structure of it all, and therein lies the fun of the issue: Watching Link and Rossmo lay down the puzzle pieces of our main character’s life, his relationships and his dreams of being a hero. This is Rossmo at his best, a calculated chaos of sketchy lines and ink spray. The layouts work wonderfully in helping you navigate the switches in time and between fantasy and reality: It’ll switch to a nine-panel grid, with a green colour palette, and you know this is happening in Chuck’s head. You’ll almost forget that there aren’t that many zombies here, although the ones you do see are gorgeously gory. Maybe future issues will have a twist to this zombie concept after all, but for now, I don’t care. It’s just a well-told story in a genre that I normally wouldn’t think twice about.
