Rick Remender is a great writer. I want to stress that in my review. He has done some really great indie work, and some of his beginning of mainstream writing has been pretty decent….A Punisher comic however, he just cant make me interested in.

This issue focuses much on ‘The Hood’, the only character (so far) that hasnt been ruined by Dark Reign. Now I know he is part of The Cabal, or whatever you call the Evil Illuminati, but so far he hasnt been touched for this story aspect until this Punisher comic. Yes for some reason this Punisher series starts off plots for other comics (first is Sentry protecting Osborn and now it’s Hood’s involvement with the new status quo). I like The Hood for a lot of reasons, mainly because even with magic abilities he still uses guns and gang tactics for his work. But sadly Remender just makes me yawn every moment of this title. Whether it’s Hood rambling about how he’ll kill Frank Castle, to the tedious non-Microchip character…I was just bored as hell. This issue also proves that Frank Castle shouldnt be fighting supervillains cause it just hurts the character. I’m sorry, I might be a fan of Punisher but I know damn well a chinese man with lighting powers could beat an ordinary man even with a gun. It makes Castle all the more ridiculous that he’s going to be fighting a (sometimes) invisible supervillain who can shapeshift into a monster as well.

What also hurts this comic is the very iffy art. I know some people love Opena (especially on Fear Agent) but sometimes his pencils are inconsistant in this. Any scenes with Hood look pretty damn good (especially the beginning pages) but the entire fight sequence towards the end is just too sketchy for my tastes. What also hurts is the extremely bad coloring by Dan Brown (although this wouldnt be the first time a man name Dan Brown has ruined a peice of literature). Too bright in some spots and too dark in others. My eyes literally needed to be closed for a bit during Castle fighting the magical chinese fighters….waaay too bright.

So once again my theory of ‘Punisher doesnt work for 616 continuity’ is correct. Not to say the idea of Frank Castle fighting The Hood or Osborn is fun, it totally can be. But that isnt what the Punisher is about. Sure they’re criminals, but what the MAX series has proved is that a more grounded series works for Punisher. Instead of fighting the Green Goblin, I am more entertained seeing Castle fight the 1,000,000th crack dealer on MAX. So even if this wasnt really in my pull bin, this title is dropped.

  1. I agree with your review. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you think of Fractions run on Punisher War Journal? That was a 616 version of the Punisher that I thought was interesting.

  2. @buffalo: I got bored of it by (going by trade standards) of volume one….and practically stopped reading it after volume two (where he becomes a Captain America knock off)

I like Fraction a lot, but his take on the Punisher (like Remender’s) was just uninteresting and nothing new for my tastes. Plus the artists they had for that series…..god they were terrible.

  3. Yeah, I’m about to just drop this and stick with MAX as well, dude.
