While I was sceptical when Marvel released the teasers for Frankencastle, I have to pronounce that this story is without doubt the absolute bee's knees. If I want Frank the vigilante I've got Aaron's Max series, whereas here I can read Frank in the Marvel universe, just amped up to the nth degree. This is Frank Castle striding through the classic 70s monster comics of guys like Gerber and Wolfman, and it is absolutely glorious. It's a story that literally drips with Remender's passion for these characters.
I think I'm most reminded of Brubaker and Fraction's Immortal Iron Fist, in that it's a rollicking good action story with oodles of depth and background, wallowing in the history of these comics. There are intriguing and mysterious bad guys, in outlandish yet striking costumes. There's an interesting mixture of characters on the good guy's side, who bicker and fight. And then there's Frank himself, bizarrely more humane than he's seemed to me in a long time. This issue itself is a breather to tell the origin of big bad Robert Hellsgaard, which intertwines the kind of horror story Hammer studios used to put out, with a nice use of classic Marvel monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone.
On the art chores Dan Brereton handles the origin sections, and it's nice enough but I've never been a huge fan. However, Tony Moore is still doing the modern day parts and it's gorgeous. I never quite "got" the acclaim that Moore got from fans until now. It was always solid but never wowed me til now. These pencils are detailed and tight, the kind of thing the eye can linger on for ages and never get bored.
There are lots of naysayers for this arc, but apparently a lot of people have jumped on board, and that's good to hear. These are comics as vehicles for imagination, were there are no boundaries or limits, except the necessity to tell a good story.
Art: 5 - Excellent
