Sometimes my favorite books are the ones I expect to be terrible, but surprise me with an unexpected level of quality. A little wordy in places (not that thats a bad thing) but witty and heartfelt with fitting and enjoyable art.
I’ve never seen Jorge Coelho before but he reminds me of Peter Panzerfaust’s Tyler Jenkins mixed with Jeff Lemire and although it’s not 100% consistant, its usually hits a high standard.
Max Bemis’s writing although not perfect, is good and at one point one of his trademark rants made me laugh at loud. He also manages to create a cast of characters that are very believable and relatable very quickly.
This book drips with more than a few cliches and suffers from a rather dull cliffhanger but still manages to deliver a comic that fits perfectly into its target niche-market. If you, like me, are an ageing, post-emo, arty, pretentious man-child, give this book a chance. Its worth it just to laugh at yourself and the children replacing you in the youth scene.
