I’ve never read a Kevin Smith comic before. I’ve seen several of his movies, but I’d hardly say I’m a die-hard fan. Just last week I saw Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and, while it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t worth the $9.50 that movies cost these days. But anyway..

I’ve only read a couple of Batman comics (as far as I can remember): The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns. He was a key character in Kingdom Come and DC: The New Frontier, but what I’m getting at is I don’t know all that much about all of his various foes. I know all the movie villains of course, but not many more, so when I heard the villain was Onomonopeia my reaction was “Who?”

Onomonopeia piqued my interest enough in this issue that I’m excited to read the next. At this point, I know so little about him, it’s hard not to want to know more. Also, I’d read about Zsasz previously and I think he’s a great villain and hope to see him in one of the upcoming movies. The dialogue overall I thought was well above-average, with some Joker lines I thought were a little much.

Now, the way the Joker was drawn just didn’t do it for me, and I think I just realized why: he reminds me of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. Otherwise, I thought the art was pretty damn grand. It wasn’t spectacular, but it’s gets the job done very effectively.

It sets up the next two issues nicely with the Joker loose and Onomonopeia doing who knows what for who knows what reason. I’m definitely going to pick them up.
