I’m jumping on this one late, but after hearing such good things about it, I wanted to give it a try. I’m caught up on the previous issues, and I must say, it lived up to the hype. This is a fun, throwbacky book that throws wacky Kirby ideas into a modern setting, and it looks great.
This issue, more so than the other three, shows us more of Kevin Kho’s personality, how powerless he feels in daily life and how Brother Eye has upset his tidy existence by turning him into basically the Hulk. He’s the straight man in this buddy comedy, and here we get to see him try (and fail) to deal with situations on his own. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it’s fun. And that’s good enough for me.
Keith Giffen’s art feels more like John Byrne’s style in Jack Kirby’s layouts, and it works: Great acting, really cool ideas on how to represent the loopy energy-based technology. And ooh, look! Kirby crackle.
