Even though I had a honking 96-page Fantastic Four comic to read this week, my overall pull list felt light this week. For over three months now OMAC has been lauded as one of the best and most surprising new books to come out of the 52 relaunch. Now if you could believe that with Dan Didio, someone who is better as a Executive Editor then as a writer, could be apart of one of the best books at DC then I would laugh at you. But with, again, a slow week and a monkey that couldn’t get off my back I couldn’t take the wait anymore. I bit the bullet and bought all three current issues of OMAC. I tell you what: If this third issue came out this week, instead of three weeks ago, it could easily have been my POTW.

This comic is so much fun! Where can I start? You got the insane ‘monsters of the week’, the great homage to Jack Kirby on every panel, and basically some of the most fun I’ve had in reading a comic in a long time. First let me go further into how much fun this book is. Didio is not telling a complicated story here; it’s basically Kevin Kho going from one place to the next, getting transformed into OMAC by Brother Eye, and smashing anything he sees. It’s like reading old Incredible Hulk comics and the way OMAC talks in the book makes it even more obvious where Didio is getting his ideas from. There is a bigger mystery in the background forming, but Didio doesn’t waste time going to the next big fight before ‘boring’ us on the bigger picture at hand.

The big reason why I loved this series so much is because of the Jack Kirby lovefest going on in the art by Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish. There are so many ‘Kirby Dots’ in each page of these issues you could go blind. Every character also has the trademark chin and forehead that you would see in an old Kirby comic just in case you forget who the’re paying tribute this too. Every panel or page has a great dynamic too it, making the action feel fluid and not feel stiff. There are some really impressive splash pages in these comics and these guys are also delivering on some of the best covers in this new DCU.

I am surprised that OMAC is selling so low right now. If you want a big, dumb and action packed comic book then this should be one of the biggest titles for mainstream audiences. Dan Didio plays it simple and decides the best course of action is ‘smashing’ and not looking back. Add in some of the best Jack Kirby homage art right now by Giffen and Koblish and you have one of the best looking books at DC too. I’m glad I finally relented and picked this series up. It’s definitely going into my pullbin full time and now every month this will be one of my most looked forward to title to read of the month.
