Like reviewing a Hellboy issue, it’s tough to really review a Nova Issue. Not saying it’s a bad thing to review either but….when a series is good for so long, you just cant find new ways to keep the reviews interesting.

What else can I say here that will make you pick this series up? It’s a fun and fresh Cosmic title that feels like no other. Abnett and Lanning love what their doing and unless they get a virus where all of their writing turns into vomit then the quality will never change. This series as it all: Action, Comedy, Thrills, Chills!, and probably some of the best last pages in the industry. You thought a returning Quasar was shocking last issue? Wait to you see what happens here!

Overall the writing and art is soild. Alves doesnt seem to get much credit for what he does here. Everything is bright and colorful but he adds so much detail to each page it’s astonding. The first page alone makes you excited with the series, with seeing Darkhawk fighting Skrulls and soliders in the background fighting as well…it feels like I’ve stepped back in time and I’m in 1993 again.

So yeah just pick this series up, this still is one of Marvels’ best titles out there. Better then what most SI stories have given us. Plus mentioning the last page again; I cannot wait to see where this takes us into the future.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. I can’t put my finger on the reason why, but this books is slightly worse than the previous issue. One thing that bothered me is that the art was not quite as good, but there is something else.

  2. @coltrane: Art wasnt as good? How wasnt it as good? I mean if you didnt like it thats fine but I found no problems with it. It’s the same artist so that cant be the problem….was it the story that turned you off? Or how the Skrulls are pretty much taken away at the end of the issue?

  3. "What else can I say here that will make you pick this series up?"

    Is it available in trades?
Can I just jump on or is back story important?

  4. @JumpingJupiter: The first arc is available in TPB right now and the Secret Invasion tie-ins are out in HC right now. Definitely recommend it, especially the SI tie in. It was one of the best for this event (With Black Panther, Nova, GOTG, and Deadpool with the other good tie-ins as well)

  5. I usually like street level characters with low level powers. What’s in Nova for me?

  6. @TNC – I still gave it a 4/4. Last month was a 5/5. If I had to analyze the things I didn’t absolutely love about the art, it was two things. First, the characterizations of the new Quasar and Worldmind seemed a little bit off. Second, the battle scenes were a bit crowded – there was one page in which ‘Hawk seemed to get lost.

@JumpJup – There is no obvious translation to the street character-style book. However, one of the things that distinguishes Nova for me is that Richard Rider, Nova, is almost overwhelmed by his power at times. Moreover, his mix-ups with cosmic heavy hitters often requires wits and gut-checks rather than simple power.

  7. I’ll flip through it and see if it turns my crank.

I’ll be looking for something to replace my Manhunter slot in the new year. Still no word on a Vic Sage or Huntress on-going so I’ll have to settle for something else.
