Kyle Higgins certainly has risen the ladder quickly in the ranks at DC. For a guy, who I never heard of, to write some pretty great stuff for the company in a short amount of time is pretty remarkable. It kinda reminds me of a young buck by the name of Scott Snyder from the good old year of 2009. Now, Higgins is tasked with writing a couple of new 52 books at DC with this title being one of them. It’s been a pretty enjoyable and solid run so far and it’s clear from this issue that it’s going to keep getting better.

It must be sad that Higgins does seem to be a bit infatuated with Dick Grayson’s love life. To the point where I think he wants to write the porno parody that will inevitably come. (I am just joking if Kyle reads this) Apart from that though, he is doing a great job building up the past with Grayson and tying it all in. It is a little weird that a seemingly ordinary carnie became a professional agent for hitmen…and with high tech, Psycho Pirate-like tech. But I’m willing to let that pass since Higgins puts it all to good use. I do like it that Higgins is bringing Dick’s adventures across the country and not keep it at Gotham. Although I do question Higgin’s seemingly bias against Philadelphia. If you are reading this Higgins, what’s the deal!? (still joking…or am I?)

Eddy Barrows continues his run with more consistency then before. There are more, great panel layouts and designs. He is certainly going for a Neal Adams vibe to his panels, but then again who isn’t now a days? But none of the panels look stiff or awkward to look at, and you can tell the obvious movements going between the panels. I also like his technique of showing movement within the panels by putting a transparency in the previous figures. It’s clear Barrows is putting a lot of effort into these pages and it shows within this issue.

The more issues of Nightwing that comes out, the better it seems to get. Kyle Higgins has a knack for writing Dick Grayson and he’s wrapping a really good tale to start Nightwing’s ‘new’ career as…Nightwing. Eddy Barrow’s art has also improved and now I look forward to seeing his work then avoiding it like the plague from before. This is definitely one of the biggest surprises to come out of this relaunch and one of the best. If you have missed out before this particular issue I urge everyone to give this series a try.
