With the return of Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows we might have the best issue of this series to date. Maybe it’s just because I’m happy to see these two back but in reality this was a fantastic issue. I hate to say this but honestly: These tie-ins to ‘Death of the Family’ have been more enjoyable than the issues of the event itself. (No offense to Mr. Snyder or Capullo but…well I gotta admit I’ve givenn 5’s to the tie-ins and more 4’s to your books.)

Higgins is just perfect at writing Dick Grayson. You feel for him as Joker is destroying his personal life right now. His circus revival went straight to hell and now he’s gotta deal with his ex-girlfriend (who also tried to kill him) kidnapped by Joker as well. All I know is that Higgins not only balanced these two stories but also made Dick get some action as well. Dick Grayson might be the ‘James Bond’ of the DCU when it comes to women.

Barrows does a great job with Joker in this issue. Maybe not like Peter Tomasi in ‘Batman and Robin’, but he is still unnerving to look at. Also, a great job with faces overall. You can tell the emotions on each character and when we get to the final fight in here the face on a particular character is scary to look at. Pepper in some of the usual aspects of Barrows art like kinetic action and ‘ghosting’; and you got one hell of a good looking issue.

So happy to see these two guys back and you can see why! This was the best issue to date thanks, in part, for being a tie-in to a major Bat-story. This series has always been an underrated gem in my eyes but finally it showcases just why it can be one of the best at DC when the time is right.

  1. I believe you meant Patrick Gleason and not Peter Tomasi…

    Otherwise great review.
