Being unfamiliar with Night Force’s previous incarnation, I had little expectations of Wolfman’s reimagining. I’m glad for that, because I imagine I’d have been more disappointed with this story if I had a history with the characters.

I would call this a Paint By Numbers horror book, but the art isn’t the main problem. The dialog is every cheesy C level horror movie cliche. Some readers find that endearing, probably in a guilty sort of way, so if that’s your thing, you will probably love this book. It wasn’t the kind of story I enjoy.

Mandrake’s art is overly shadowed. I get it. It’s horror. It’s supposed to be dark and mysterious. But the shadows didn’t make me tingle with suspense like they do in Locke & Key, they made me shrug.

Again, if you’re a fan of horror books that don’t really challenge your expectations of storytelling, this might be your pick of the week. I gave it a shot because I like to try reading as many titles as possible. I don’t see myself picking up the second issue.

Story: 3 - Good

  1. Thanks for the review. I looked through it and thought the art looked bland, I’m not a big Mandrake fan, and nothing that interesting looked to be happening. A little sad, I hope slight hope for this series, but that’s okay, lots of other good stuff to read. I will stick with Swamp Thing and Animal Man for my horror style DC books.

    • Swamp Thing and Animal Man are absolutely killing it. If you need more of a horror fix, I’d also recommend Locke & Key, if you’re aren’t already reading it.

  2. I thought it was very interesting. I, too, have never read Night Force in any of its previous incarnations so I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t disappointed at all in this comic and I will glady be offering my $2.99 for the next issue.
