I must preface this by saying I’m not a regular reader of this book. I bought the first few issues, and it just couldn’t hold my attention for whatever reason. It’s not to say that I think Zeb Wells did a horrible job or anything, it just wasn’t the same New Mutants from when I was 13 and I guess that’s what I was kind of expecting.
But I’m straying. Let’s get back on track.
I picked this up because of that amazing cover. It practically called out to me to buy it. And I’m glad I did, because it’s probably the best single issue I’ve read all year.
It deals with Magma going out on a hell-binding date with the Devil, apparently the result of a promise made by her in order to save the rest of the team. Abbnett and Lanning perfectly bring out the tension and awkwardness of a first date, let alone a first date with the mother-effing Devil.
Not only that, but they do a pretty convincing job of showing that the king and eternal ruler of Hell is, you know, kinda sweet.
And it also ends in a way that is extremely sweet and romantic, but also makes you kind of afraid for Magma. She better watch out. He’s still the Devil.
All in all, a great book. Best Abbnett and Lanning in while.
