I used to hate Chris Bachalo’s art.  I thought the angles of his anatomy were all wrong.  Just looking at it made me dizzy.  But as years passed, I grew to love it, and look forward to seeing his name on books.

Maybe some day, I’ll feel that way about Eric Canete’s work.  But that day isn’t today.

I thought the first three pages were fantastic.  I liked his Spider-Man, his Hippo, his Hawkeye.  The major problem is, I don’t like his Luke Cage.  The proportions don’t jibe with any version of Luke Cage that I’ve seen.  And they seem to fluctuate from page to page, as well.  Too many corners from one angle, not enough from another.

Arcudi’s story is intriguing.  Luke Cage goes to Philly to help someone from his past.  The dialog is good, and he weaves in some characters that I haven’t seen outside Spider-Man for quite a while.  I’m going to pick up the next issue, with hopes that I’ll connect more with Canete’s art style.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 2 - Average

  1. The whole reason I even entertained picking this up was Eric Canete’s art. He has a style that truly sets him apart in the same way that artists like Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon and Paul Pope have that make me want to see their interpretations of any character or genre.

  2. @Pumatastic: I’m certain he has fans.  His art seems pretty divisive.  Again, while I’m not saying the style is similar to Bachalo’s (or, let’s say, Rafael Grampa’s), I believe the visceral reaction of long time comic readers is similar.  Camps of people who like how different his art is, and camps who just can’t get on board.

I hope that I will grow to like his work, but right now, it seemed too inconsistent and jarring to me.
