I’m not going to lie to you guys. As big as a Jonathan Hickman fan I had a real hard time to justify my enjoyment of New Avengers #1. He has a real good handle on Black Panther and the promise of using ‘The Illuminati’ is really exciting for me. I loved the premise of ‘The Illuminati’ with Bendis and this type of group is perfect for a guy like Hickman. But with a confusing threat and not much explanation it was a big hard to really enjoy this. But that’s always been the case with me reading Hickman so I put full trust in the second issue delivering the goods.

‘So far so good’, I would have to say with this second issue. First off I absolutely LOVED the multiverse discussion here. This is a new way to look at multiverses in comic books and Hickman has written one intriguing premise here. If a universe connects with another universe than they’re both going to be wiped out. Thanks to some Hickman infographics I was just enthralled with this explanation but I’m sure others were completely lost. This issue also cemented for me that not only should Hickman write a Black Panther ongoing series but also a Namor and Iron Man too. He’s already got a handle on Reed Richards and Black Bolt thanks to FF (and also with Namor). But the way he writes Namor and Iron Man is just perfect. His Captain America though could use some work though. He is a little too stereotypical as the solider in my eyes.

This was a pretty easy issue for Steve Epting to draw when you think about it. Not saying his work isn’t good here but this was mostly a talking heads issue. What also helps was that he had these characters in a completely dark room so not a lot of complexity with these panels. But this is still a really good looking issue and it had to be difficult just because he had to stay on model the entire time. Like Hickman he’s had a lot of issues to draw Reed, Namor, Black Bolt, and also drawing Captain America for so many years. So in hindsight this isn’t going to be the most difficult set of characters for Epting to draw. Then again you see his brilliance towards the tail end of the issue where we see alternate timelines of everything going to hell for the Illuminati. So we get a glimpse of what’s to come and it makes me excited Epting is the artist for this series.

You got multiverses, a secret cabal, and the infinite gems? Seriously I can’t think of a more perfect premise for Hickman to write. I’m sure a lot of the crazy science was lost on a lot of people here but I just ate this right up. Maybe a series like this is easy for a guy like Hickman to write or for Epting to draw thanks to using these characters already. But with glimpses into the future I have a feeling we’re gonna have one hell of a series here. All I have to be is a little patience…and I am SO known for that…
