My problem with MORNING GLORIES is that Nick Spencer’s dialogue is a little too good. He has created a excellent bunch of regular teenagers, but that also means that they can be a little cruel, a little selfish, a little bitchy. A big plot point in the issue is that Casey is the only one who really cares about saving Jade’s life as an end in itself. The rest of the Glories are in it for self-serving reasons. So why exactly should I care if they team up like they’re a bunch of friends? This issue ends with a twist which uses that problem, but it doesn’t solve the problem, and if Spencer is using that problem to some thematic purpose it hasn’t come across yet. Fortunately, we have Nick Eisma’s art, which adds energy and action to even the scenes with a couple of people sitting around and talking. This book isn’t bad, but if it doesn’t invest me in its heroes a little more I might start waiting for the trades.
