I have to say I liked the last issue of Mighty Avengers. It was nicely written and pretty well drawn. I was actually surprised to hear that the iFanboy staff didn't like it. However, if they end up not liking this one, I won't be surprised. This one was a pretty stiff downturn. Even the art seemed to suffer. Maleev's pencils are usually a highlight, but here, it just didn't gel well in areas, particularly the scenes in Puerto Rico where the art seemed more confusing than anything. Add to that the rather oddly exaggerated facial reactions on that last page and I was left more puzzled than anything.
The plot is fairly simple to get: Fury's assembling a group of children of heroes and villains to combat the Skrulls. Fury actually takes a back seat this issue to let Daisy Johnson serve as his pick-up gal. The assembled party are the kids of Ares, the Phantom Rider, the Griffin, and Dr. Druid plus some bald guy with a now-erased criminal record named "Jerry Sledge". Layla Miller would have joined, but that would have meant they'd fail, according to her. Nevertheless, the assembled motley crew has been enlisted by Fury where he basically says "Obey me or you'll get yourself killed." So, Fury has basically kidnappped at least one minor with the intention of putting him in deadly situations... I'm sure his God of War dad loves that.
I have to say this was majorly disappointing. The primary character of this piece was a non-entity character from a past non-entity book while Fury shows up (in blackface, no less) for three pages in the beginning and two at the end. The rest of the cast feel like they're there to be there. I felt very apathetic about this whole issue. We're barely a month into Secret Invasion and it feels like we're already in filler territory. There weren't even any Skrulls around this time. The feeling that Fury was planning something big last issue just fell flat here, in my opinion. Maybe something of promise will arise but, right now, this felt like a woefully underwhelming issue.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
Being a long time Marvel reader I loved every moment of this issue. The character’s parents are all characters I know of so I really enjoyed seeing a legacy aspect being introduced into marvel. Plus I thought Bendis did a great job of establishing their different personalities in such a short amount of time.
Far as Fury in "black-face" it was an obvious nod to Fury in the Ulitimate line, I didn’t take it as anything other than that.
I know, but I still didn’t like it.
i really liked this one. some of the art was fascinating, especially ares’ son’s eyes. maleev inked this? whoever did it was inconsistent.
weird, disjointed feel to this book. maybe bendis knows that the comic book crowd knows a "super-team setup book" so he jammed in as much characterization and dialog in there, letting us fill in the rest of the poop.
i was down on SI after reading SI#2, but i’m back in after this one.
i’m a little confused about what’s up with secret invasion, book-wise. it seems like mighty avengers, new avengers, and secret invasion are all integral to the story- like it’s a 24 issue limited series.
