DC continuity intimidates me. I’ve
caught onto Starman and John’s Green Lantern and Booster Gold, as well
as Morrison’s Batman, but I am in no real hurry to catch up on
everything else anytime soon. Fortunately, this new book is apparently
out of continuity with main DC, which makes it and all it entails that
much more attractive.

The Mighty’s world is one where there is but one superhero – like
Superman, a citizen of America but servant to the world – who earned
his superpowers – which are similar to Superman’s – during his time in
the military – like Captain America – after being exposed to the atomic
potency of a nuclear bomb – like Hulk; okay, I think I’ve clarified
enough.

Because he is the only one superhero around, however, he has devised an
empirical corporation based on himself and his image. His codename,
Alpha One, is the banner of many licensed products that provide funding
for Section Omega, an organization that act both as Alpha One’s paper
pushers, as well as, according to Captain Michael Shaw, the Green
Berets to Alpha One’s (one-man) army.

To make Alpha One even less of the center focus in his own book, there
is Lieutenant Gabriel Cole, a seemingly regular guy who is caught
between his work and his woman. Things only get more conflicting for
him when the series’ inciting incident changes Cole’s future with the
Alpha and Omega from there on out.

I was quite surprised and impressed by this book, and enjoyed in quite
a bit. The art is simple but attractive, and the pacing and writing of
the book has left me wanting more. Well played, strangers.

  1. I love it.  It’s almost like something classic mixed with modern elements just the right way.
