Yes this is the fifth (count em!) Marvel Zombies  mini to come out.  You would think that it has outstayed it’s welcome and the gimmick is over. Well……the gimmick is beyond over but I think this series has been nothing but gold since Fred Van Lente took over. With this mini, Lente and a few other writers give us the ‘end’ of the  Zombieverse. But is it really the end?

The idea of going to different universes and seeing the now ‘normal’ zombies try to relive their lives is pretty interesting. The narrative is more towards Spider-Man since he is trying to find a cure for their disease. The two best issues are done by Fred Van Lente himself, the first being a retro look into Spider-Man…..with a lot of eating. Then the final issue with an ending that is a bit more sophisticated then I would imagine for a series like this. The stuff in between is done by current horror writers and they do a pretty good job. You will recognize the one name, Seth Grahame-Smith, for the infamous ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’; and the other writers have done other pretty good novels. (Maberry with Patient Zero, Wellington for his Monster/Vampire series)

The art can be a bit of a mix bag at points. Just like the writing, it’s a new artist for each issue so there is no real connection to each issue. The highlights are the first and last issue (again); especially the Spider-Man issue with the retro feel. It looks like something you would see from a Jack Kirby comic. I’m not saying the art is bad all around, but some consistency would be nice. Either way it is just a small hamper on a pretty good mini.

So to answer my question from before: It’s a yes and no. Yes this could be the ‘finale’ but with Marvel’s ‘milking for all it’s worth’ policy it could definitely return. But as it stand now it is a nice end cap for the entire series. Even if you didn’t read the third and forth mini’s (highly recommend reading them) it is a nice way to figure out just how the sequel by Kirkman truly ends. Either way I think you’ll have a lot of fun reading this series and this mini in general.
