Wow, look at this book! Is there any better way to make an issue sell less? I mean the title sounds like such a cash in on Wolverine’s popularity. The concept sounds like a Marvel Zombies rip-off. It’s a sequel to a book that wasn’t that great and didn’t sell that well. It’s not in continuity. And the cover is a murky mess of shapes and characters. Is there anything else Marvel could’ve done to make this series fail? Actually, there is, they could have made the content terrible, because in truth, this is actually quite a good read.
Don’t be put off by the fact that this is a sequel (or actually prequel) to Marvel Universe vs the Punisher, 2010′s mediocre, postapocalyptic romp through New York. If you never read that book (chances are you didn’t) it will still make perfect sence, and if you did read it, don’t worry, it’s better this time. Also, try not to think of this as Marvel Zombies, its more like Marvel 28 Day’s Later. I know that’s only a slight distinction, but it is different. Rather than a comedic romp full of violence, this is a dark and gritty tale of a virus that is turning everybody into rage filled savages. Granted it’s not that original, and the charm of seeing Spider-Man eating the raw body parts of other heroes has long since run out, but there is still something to enjoy here. Wolverine, the punisher and a host of other supporting characters are well written and the plot moves along nicely. Action, jeopardy and violence are all here in large quantities.
The art is nice as well. Jonathan Maberry and Laurence Campbell create a dark, inky, world that is believable and horrific. Different colour schemes are subtly used in different scenes and help to create great atmosphere. These artists were a great pic for this book and after reading it, I can’t think of somebody who I’d have rather seen illustrate this story.
Overall this book is pretty darn good actually. It’ll probably fail to set the world alight like Marvel Zombies did, but its quality is far above that comic which was nothing more than a shock filled gore feast that decayed into terrible sequels. If you’ve a horror fan, this really is a must read.

Thought the Punisher series was good, having fun trying to correlate these two series. This is the Marvel U of 28 Days, but Maberry got it a lil wrong there when he described it as a bacteria, cus that drawing on the board behind Pym there was clearly one of a virus. Makes more sense that this would be a virus too, cus gene transfer is what they do, not bacteria. Did you see Campbell’s work on Deadpool Pulp? Great stuff.
