Nightwing was another Batman RIP tie in this week that didn’t really work very well, although for a completely different reason than why Robin didn’t work: Nightwing didn’t really tie in to the story of Batman RIP whatsoever. Other than an offhand comment about Nightwing being brought in because Batman was “preoccupied” or “busy” (and really, when is he not?) there was no mention of the RIP events at all. Unless this story is building to something that I totally do not see coming (I’ll concede it’s possible) this issue just had the Batman RIP banner slapped on it for no discernable reason other than to sell more copies.
That’s not to say the story was bad. It was actually kind of fun. I’ve enjoyed Tomasi’s run on Nightwing so far, and this story shows no signs of letting me down. Dick is clearly being played like a nickel jukebox on ladies’ night, but he’s always been kind of naïve, so I can buy that. Other than him decking Two-Face out of the blue (because he won’t stay evil? Really?), and him maneuvering around and taking out four thugs in the most deceptively roomy sedan ever built, I have no complaints.
This was a solid issue… It just had absolutely nothing to do with Batman, RIP. (Oh, and does anyone out there think that assassin/sniper is anyone OTHER than Harvey? I’m skeptical just because it seems way too obvious that it’s him.)
