All Star Superman #10

There are a lot of great comics being published these days. New Avengers is great. Daredevil packs an emotional punch every time I read it. Captain America thrills me to the core month after month. They're great comics. All Star Superman is superb. This book feels like something much bigger than comics. It's something I feel so glad to know about because I want to be able and show this people regardless of whether or not they read comics. (Is anyone else salivating over the Absolute that is no doubt in the future?) The stories Grant Morrison is writing are totally crazy. Frank Quitely art in this book is weird and fantastic. I remember a while back when Ron, Conor and Josh did their episode on comic book artists and writers and how some teams just click. Morrison and Quitely click like no other team does. What I find most striking about this book however is the tone. Superman is a very isolated character and you can sense his sadness in this book on every single page. Also note that Lex Luthor does not say one single thing in this issue and comes across more of a dick and more evil than I have seen him in any book. I love the All Star version of Superman for a lot of reasons. The moment when Superman talks the girl from the ledge was chilling for me. It was him hugging her that really capped it off nicely. This is Superman. He's isolated. He's heroic. He has a strong sense of what is good and right and he believes in what he does and he does it because he feels the need to. I could spend paragraphs trying to tell all the strange details of the shrunken society on Mars or the fact that Superman is supposedly going to die of radiation poisoning but I won't. I won't because this book isn't about getting wrapped up in the details and continuity. It's about the tone and about Kal-el. They've taken a classic hero and given him an amazing book to do his work in.
