Short and to the point: This isnt going to be remembered as the greatest DC story of all time. What this entire story, from first to third trade, is overall a mixed bag. It has great potential to be a big melodrama of good vs evil, but what it boils down to is just a long strain of fighting and fantastic pages of art.

The big problem with this story, other then being completley one-sided, it’s that its way to long. This didnt need to be 12 issues or 3 trades, it could’ve been one huge trade (or cut the issues in half). Would it make the story more dynamic? Would it make the innevitable fight scenes more bareable to read? Would it make the 1,000x of story with the villains trying to take the good guys down permanitely less mundane? Probably not. Heck Avengers/Invaders seem to suffer from this as well. Both series are just too long and overall nothing exciting happens from page to page.

What I can recommend this book (and loving this guy makes me totally bias) is the fantastic Ross art in this book. Is this better then Kingdom Come? No. But no matter what Ross draws and colors, no matter what characters he uses, it looks absolutely amazing. It’s the saving grace of this book. If this was like, Dan Jurgens or even Gary Frank (both great artists in their own right); it wouldnt save this book. This is somewhat of a Silver Age tale and this is the type of story Ross is made to draw. Plus he draws the best versions of the villains, I love his take on the Legion of Doom.

So yeah overall, in terms of story and characterisation, it’s not going to blow your socks off. But if you like anything Alex Ross does, or just want to see fantastic art in a comic, this is where you need to be. Otherwise it’s best left to leave this series alone and hope maybe a newbie at comics pick it up. It seems more suited for new people going into comics then someone whos’ read them for such a long time.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I’ll give you that this is Alex Ross’ love letter to Super Friends, The Legion of Doom, The Silver Age and The Justice League. It’s a bit of a conceit. When Kingdom Come was released I picked up Marvels and enjoyed it. Universe X, not so much. I’m not sure why there is an Avengers/Invaders, but okay. I did enjoy pretty much each of the over-sized DC stories that Ross has told. The story could have been a little better. The art is phenomenal. This is eye-candy pure and simple. I enjoyed the Super Friends cartoon and the comic book and this fits pretty good right next to those trade paperback collections. I may thumb through it a little less than the other ones, but that’s okay.
