First before I write this review I will admit a slight bias. The subject matter of both trauma and addiction that this issue revolved around are subjects I have made a career out of addressing. That being said I have to give it up to JT Krul. He did a fantastic job of realistically portraying Roy going through post traumatic stress and the inevitable relapse that would have occurred if he had gone through those events and was given prescription opioids for the pain.
Specifically the use of flashbacks/dreams to reflect Roy processing the trauma was one point I was impressed about. Often time when experiencing trauma one will process through dreams. Krul would have the dream sequence occur and have Roy awake with a start. This is how one often reacts. The startled manner in which Roy looks around, would actually happen. Other points that from my perspective were well done, the self isolation that often goes hand in hand with both trauma and addiction when Roy pushes Dinah away with hurtful words. The explosive reactions to events bordering on over reaction. Lastly the relapse that if Roy in fact was in recovery would have occurred in real life given the events that led up to this issue. Of course the painkillers would not work, as Roy points out, of course he would be constantly rubbing the place of his injury as it was shown, and of course his brain overloaded with stimuli would go to a "safe place" of using with his deceased friend.
The art was serviceable in this issue. Nothing spectacular but nothing horrible. I did however like the multi- part silent panel that showed Roy breaking the window and his reaction to it. For me the writing and the story was the whole thing in this issue.
As a professional in the field of addiction and mental health I applaud JT Krul for a respectfully showing the effects of these events on Roy in a realistic and heartfelt manner.
