What has happenend to the once and mighty DC team? Seriously, what was once one of the best books ever put on print (thanks to Grant Morrison), this series has been so up and down once Meltzer and McDuffie brought vol.3 to us. Now I love Meltzer, Identity Crisis is still one of my favorite stories coming out of DC….Okay it’s not the best ever, but it entertains me all the time when I read it.

But this plot, man it’s hard to read and care for what’s going on. We complain about Secret Invasion and how they have been in the Savage Land for 5 issues, but I should’ve known that DC started this type of trend with this series. They seriously have Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman sitting around a table getting new members for about 3 issues, or 3 parts for this trade. Man….that is warning sign number one, cause that got old after the first couple of pages from the first issue. But overall the story just isnt that good, I mean maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of Red Tornado but it just seemed like Meltzer had a hard time trying to write an arc for the guy.

The art isnt too bad in this book however, it was pretty on the eyes. Ed Benes makes the art look sharp and clean, and makes the fights a little more interesting then they are written. Although I dont give points for having an artist draw pretty girls, I gotta say he makes a wonderful Tigra here.

Sadly good art isnt enough for me to recommend this. I mean most you guys probably have read this run and already either dropped ir or are still reading this series. I’ve read the hardcover for Lighting Saga and it’s alittle more enjoyable then this, probably because the JSA is involved. But it makes me sad that this series has really gone from a incredible series to a series on the same level as Flash or Wonder Woman in terms of quality. Maybe it’s time to reboot the series again, cause it just hasnt worked for me at all. Which is even sadder to think that we need another reboot….

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

  1. The art by Benes is beautiful and contains a couple of holys**t moments. The story of Redtornado and his pinnochio syndrome is alright. I wasn’t a redtornado fan either but Meltzer did a solid job writing the dynamic between him and his wife/family and the JLA thread with Red arrow was pretty good. All in all a solid trade, above average in my book.
