Part two of Trinity War… and I’m sucked in completely. Which is saying something because – truthfully – I was coming into the event with a mix of event fatigue and uncertainty about an event revolving around Pandora, the Phantom Stranger and the Question.

This part isn’t about action as much as it is interaction. Not that there weren’t some fantastic action-y moments in there (loved Vibe taking out the Flash!) But Vibe’s uncertainty about taking on Flash…Hawkman’s approach to medicine…Batman detecting…Superman’s guilt over killing Dr. Light…Wonder Woman’s exchange with Steve Trevor. These little flashes of character are part of what keeps the book grounded, which is critical in an event involving super-powered beings and magic.

And then there are the mysteries surrounding Pandora’s box, and the shadowy figure gathering the villains (yes, I know who it is but his reasons for being there and for his actions aren’t clear just yet) Oh. And the cough. You know that can’t be good.

Johns and Lemire seem like ideal writing partners; great imaginations, great with characters, great with pacing and with stories that have a larger-than-life-scope. Add in Doug Mahnke artwork (which remains outstanding and somehow consistent even with three additional inkers), and you have an event that is so far exceeding what I hoped for.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
