After the first issue of this mini-series I was quite enthused about the potential for this series. I have a real soft spot for these ‘B-list’ characters. I was presented with a great plot wherein Maxwell Lord has made everyone in the world forget him, except this tiny band of sometimes allies. Led, sort of, by Booster Gold they are fractious to say the least, but at the same time totally reliant on one another. Or, at least, that was the first issue… in the second the writers lose that thread in a series of vignettes that stutter and lurch the plot forward, but give us little of the sweet interplay between these old companions. By force of the plot’s motive each of the characters outside the core group acts out of character, which leaves the interactions feeling somehow more hollow. Finally, for a group of experienced costumed adventurers they make some truly terrible tactical choices. All the energy I had after the first issue has been thoroughly damped by this follow up.
