That’s it? Oh. Okay. The end of this arc caught me a bit off guard. After four issues of the Dark Justice Leaguers running around in, well, the dark, I didn’t notice it building to this point. Maybe the momentum’s too subtle for me to have noticed in issues; maybe it’s a book I’d be better off reading in trade. In any event, Mikel Janin’s art has made this well worth my time. The layouts sizzle, the lines are crisp and clear, but most of all, the facial expressions just blow me away every time. Janin is a man born to draw furrowed brows and mouths open in screams of terror. As much as this story baffled me, I respect it for making some bold choices. For one, it doesn’t end with the formation of a Justice League. These characters still want to go their separate ways, don’t like one another and are more or less just as broken as before. This book gives them places and pretexts to interact, but aside from Deadman, they’re not really superheroes, at least not yet. Let’s see what the cards have in store the for the next arc.
