I figured out one of the reasons that I’m loving this series. Continuity is referenced, but not in a way that loses me. I guess it’s more that continuity is explained. I appreciate this because I don’t know my DC history like I know my Marvel. Year after year, I take a step further into the DC Universe and this book makes it easy.
I knew who the Atom (Ray Palmer) was. I might even have an old, random JLA issue with him in, but apart from Identity Crisis and Countdown, I know very little about him. In JL: Cry for Justice #2 I feel that he gave me everything that I needed to get on board with the Atom. Of course, the origin and bonus material helped a great deal.
I know that some people might complain that there isn’t a lot of action going on in this series, but I’m fascinated with the character work that Robinson is doing here. It might help to think of this series as a “warm-up” to his upcoming JLA run.
Now I haven’t read JLA since “The Lightning Saga”, but I’m definitely going to give Robsinson’s team a try. If what I’m reading in the Starman Omnibi is any indication, I think I’ll be sticking around too.
