Budget concerns made it necessary for me to purchase only two books this week, and I chose Teen Titans and Justice League. I was very happy with one of my purchases, and disappointed with the other one. So which title does Justice League deserve this week? Let's put it this way: I wish I had purchased two copies. Of Teen Titans. First, the good: I rather liked the Batman/Green Lantern interaction. The coolest thing about Batman, to me, has always been that he has no powers, but when he says "jump," EVERYONE says "how high?" So authoritative is his presence that even Superman defers to him, so watching Green Lantern's arrogance melt away as Batman took charge was fantastic. Batman on Apokolips is an intriguing concept, and one I look forward to seeing completed. I also enjoyed Johns' characterization of the Flash. And Jim Lee's art--especially on Darkseid--was amazing. Now, the bad: Sheesh. Batman unmasking in front of Green Lantern, and allowing himself to be paraded through the air by parademons? Give me a break. So uncharacteristic was that of Batman that it caused me basically to check out for the rest of the book. Green Lantern's battle cry of "We got this!" was annoying. And Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and Superman were basically just filler material, pretty pictures on the page with nothing to contribute to the story. By far--BY FAR--the most disappointing issue so far. Here's hoping Johns can pull it together and craft a compelling ending to this tale. One where Batman has his cowl back ON.
