When I first heard Geoff Johns and Jim Lee were taking the reigns over the Justice League titled, I thought that, finally, the title would become the core book of the DCU. Akin to what BMB has done with his Avengers's titles, the Justice League should be the book where that sets the tone for the rest of the DCU. However, it seems that Johns has taken a page out of Mark Millar's Ultimates book and put the focus on widescreen action sans character development. Rather than making the focus of the book the characters, the action has taken center stage. And there is nothing wrong with that. As a long-time DC fan, I am thoroughly enjoying this title. Yet, I can't help but wonder, if this is supposed to be the core DCnU title, shouldn't Johns spend a little more time developing the characters instead of rushing from action scene to action scene? In terms of the story, this issue picks up with the parademons over taking Earth and the Justice Leaguers haphazardly fighting them. Heads up, the new Superman seems to be a punch first, ask questions later kind of guy. Wonder Woman is introduced, contrary to how she is portrayed in her own title, as an innocent warrior princess who is enchanted with man's world and still getting her bearings. Aquaman also gets a last page reveal. Cyborg, consistent with the trend set in past issues, also gets the strongest character moments here. As a reader, I am most interested in the future of Victor Stone whereas I feel slightly detached from the rest of the league. Moreover, it may just be me, but the rest of the league seems like a bunch of teenagers with attitude, squabbling with each other and making witty remarks while they bash villains. Perhaps thats a result of the reset. Overall, the story is decent and moves forward, ever so slightly. Jim Lee's art, as per usual, is stunning, though a few of his smaller panels seem a little rushed. Finally, I was super stocked at the cameo of Orr from Superman: For Tomorrow in one of the early pages of the issue. It lends credence to the theory that the purple hooded lady from Flashpoint in the DCnU is the witch that was in Superman: For Tomorrow. Excited to see where this plot thread goes--Next Major Event or DC's Built In Reboot Escape Button?
