Boy, what a difference 5 years makes. Let’s take a look at the Justice League heroes as they are NOW compared to how they were 5 years ago…….

SUPERMAN – NOW: Still figuring out his place in the world, the Superman of “NOW” wants to make a difference and wants a place in the hearts and minds of the people of planet Earth. He knows his power can corrupt but manges to keep things in check thanks to his alter-ego Clark Kent. Kent keeps him grounded and allows him to shed the burden of being the greatest hero that ever was…. or will be.
(Suggested reading, Superman by George Perez and Action Comics by Grant Morrison)

SUPERMAN – 5 YEARS AGO: Punches first, asks questions later. Makes jokes when swatting bad guys with trucks. A man of little words. All action. Not someone that I would want to be my leader.
(Suggested reading, Justice League by Geoff Johns)

*********************

BATMAN – NOW: The worlds greatest detective certainly lives up to that name in his latest explolites. Batman utizilizes his brain as much as his brawn in keeping Gotham City safe. A worthy father figure as well, his proteages Dick, Tim, and Damian all look up and respect him as a man and as a hero (well, okay, maybe not Damian so much.) Not one to make others look bad, he is a cultivating figure – not a deconstructing one.
(Suggested reading, Batman by Scott Snyder)

BATMAN – 5 YEARS AGO: Likes to humor other heroes and taunt them into doing stupid things to make himself look better. Slightly egotisical and power mad. Stay out of his city if you are not one of his Robin’s.
(Suggested reading Justice League by Geoff Johns)

**********************

WONDER WOMAN – NOW: An Amazonian princess that demands respect not only from her might, but because of her wisdom and nurturing demeanor. One second she can be calming a frightened girl with soft words and the next doing battle with demi-gods. A force to be reckoned with and a beauty to be awed.
(Suggested reading, Wonder Woman by Brian Arrazello)

WOMAN WOMAN – 5 YEARS AGO: Unsure of herself and borderline retarded. Ice cream makes her giggle (along with Rock and Roll of course. I mean who doesn’t love Rock and Roll?) and she loves to fight. Fighting a battle is her favorite thing. Wonder Woman wakes up in the morning and wants to fight. Fighting is want she wants all the time. Loves to fight. It’s all about fighting.
(Suggested reading, Justice League by Geoff Johns)

************************

GREEN LANTERN – NOW: Battle weary and harded, Hal Jordan has seen the cosmos but forgot what Earth looked like. Never one to say he was the smartest man in the room, Hal does know that he is best when being pushed to his limits. It is then that Hal learns and grows as a human being and as a hero. This is what makes him a smart man and someone worthy of being called Green Lantern.
(Suggested reading, Green Lantern by ….errr….Geoff Johns?)

GREEN LANTERN – 5 YEARS AGO: A tool that refers to himself in the 3rd person.
(Suggested reading, Justice League by Geoff Johns)

*************************

THE FLASH – NOW: Not only a competent superhero that battles bad guys as well as putting out fires and re-building apartments and making life better for the citizens of Central City, The Flash is also a devoted Homicide Detective that wants to make a difference.
(Suggested reading, The Flash by Francis Manapul)

THE FLASH – 5 YEARS AGO: A dude that runs really fast.
(Suggested reading, Justice League by Geoff Johns)

Comments

  1. Action Comics is suggested reading for Superman – Now?

  2. Great review, Ghostmann. I tip my hat to you.

  3. Ditto Ghostmann.

  4. Every “5 Years Ago” version of a character in your review is why I dropped this book. I like my super heroes smart and capable, not knuckleheads who like to punch stuff and declare that THEY should be the leaders of anything (I’m looking at YOU, 5 years ago Aquaman).

    • I’ll be honest, I’m a sucker for Jim Lee’s art and right now that is the only reason I’m dropping 3.99 on this comic every month. I am also hoping that once JL stops being a “past-tense” book and starts taking place in the present that the heroes I love and adore will all take a turn for the better and stop being those knuckleheads you mentioned.

The only bright side I see to Justice League being written like this, you know for 10 year old kids, is that those 10 year old kids are loving the hell out of this book and hopefully will become life long comic book fans.

John’s Justice League is the gateway drug. 😉
