Justice League #1 might have chosen an odd place to start a team-up book – featuring only two of its major characters and cameoing others – but the script is entertaining, the art attractive, and the plot promises what could be a cool opening arc.

The main characters here are Batman and Green Lantern, who’ve never met before – GL even expresses some surprise that Batman actually exists. The interplay between the two characters is nearly pitch-perfect for a first meeting, questioning each other’s powers and motivations as they work together to confront a new, unknown threat. If this issue is any indication, Justice League will have strong interactions between its cast – and that’s just how it should be.

As a jumping-on point for DC neophytes, it’s reasonable: there aren’t a lot of new characters and things to learn about yet, especially since both Batman and Green Lantern have film incarnations in recent memory. The flip side is that not a whole lot happens in this issue, so new readers will need to be drawn in more by the dialogue and the promise of a cool story rather than the actual presence of one.

Worth watching, at least, since it could really hit its stride soon – but for now, nothing to write home about.
