There weren’t many user reviews so i thought i’d drop my 2 cents. =)

I enjoyed the heck out of this first issue. I liked that we’re being tossed right into the action and seeing the key members meet for the first time. Jim Lee’s art fires on all cylinders and is a perfect match for this type of blockbuster comic. I feel like there will be a lot of new twists and turns with these characters that i already know.

As someone who is completely worn out by the “dark and gritty” writing style in contemporary superhero comics, i found Johns’ writing in this issue to be very refreshing. For me this is the perfect tone for a superhero team book. Its accessible and has a great “all ages” feel that both children and adults can both enjoy.

I’m really excited for where this book is going to go.

My only gripe, is as a digital reader i was bummed that i had to wait until 2pm to get this and that some of the display type was difficult to read. I completely missed the “5 years ago” thing on the first page. I credit that to taking a condensed typeface that is already difficult to read, tracking it super close together and adding to many outline strokes. It doesn’t render well on a screen, and i think stuff like that needs to be considered when you are creating books for print and digital spaces.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I’ve noticed in some of the threads on this sight that the both of us seem to be in the same mindset right now: we are both pretty tired of the “everything has to be dark and gritty” thing that has been going on in comics as of late. That being said, i was looking forward to what you thought of this book. I had a blast with it and I’m glad to see you had a good time with it as well. Can’t wait for issue 2!

    • hey thanks ! yeah i’ve noticed a zeitgeist with it outside of this site as well. Rucka had a pretty good quote about dark and gritty the other day. You know its pretty natural for shifts in pop culture for new stuff to happen as a direct reaction the mainstream..ie. Jazz, Punk etc…..even Zombies and Vampires…that then becomes the mainstream.

I think we’re on the precipice of some big change in comics. Just a hunch.
