When it comes to DC, I’m a Batman fan first and foremost. While I enjoyed the animated JLU, I’ve never had much of an interest in the JLA comic. This is my first Justice League comic I’ve ever bought and the major motivating factor in getting it was Jim Lee. I rarely buy a comic purely based on the artist but this is definite one of those times. I’ve always loved Lee’s style since I first discovered him like most during his X-Men run and especially his work on Batman: Hush.

But onto the comic. Johns does a good enough job reintroducing these characters and establishing this new universe. Because it’s a #1 it spends a lot more time setting up than telling a compelling story. The majority of page time is taken up by Batman and Green Lantern which from the outset remain relatively unchanged in appearance and personality. I was pleased that Batman was featured so heavily and it should come as no surprise that Johns utilizes GL here but other than that the rest of the JL are barely seen making this issue feel more like Brave and the Bold than JL, but I can forgive that as long as I can only assume the cast will grow with each issue as the league is formed.

Johns manages to keep the exposition to a minimum although it still feels unnatural. I understand the need to establish names of characters for new readers but did Lantern really have to talk in the third person that many times after Batman already addresses him by name? Otherwise the art was fantastic and it’s awesome to be reading a new comic with Lee on pencils. Hope he sticks around on this book for a while which promises to be the start of something good.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
