Art and cover by FREDDIE WILLIAMS II
Size: 32 pages
Price: 2.99
Oh, Freddie Williams II, I’ve missed you so much. The artist who made Robin one of the most gorgeous books to grace my collection takes over from the great Howard Porter to draw this series and it’s the best this book has looked in a while. It’s a combination of the scratchy pencil work and the broad, powerful splash pages; Williams understands how to structure a page and make it fantastically engaging and easy on the eye. Action scenes, and straight talking scenes are both played out with the same intense momentum and the characters all look more vibrant and recognizable than in Porter’s (still great) work. The only problem here is Matthew Sturges’ story which, unfortunately, felt fragmented and loose in all the wrong places; the motivation of the antagonist didn’t seem all that clear, even at the end of the issue, and some of the dialogue felt a bit stiff and uninviting, with some characters feeling way off in their presentation. It’s strange, though, as Sturges normally does a great job with these characters and it seems odd that he’s lapsed back into the mundane attitude of the first few issues; hopefully this is just a blip, though, and the action will pick up next issue.
