There is a two page spread near the beginning of this story that is there to blow your mind.  I mean, you’re in a kingdom of toys!  And it’s, well, disappointing.  So dark and sketchy.  While it succeeds in setting tone, and of showing the scope of just how small Joe is in this world, it only hints at how cool this world should look.  The color scheme that works so well for the rest of this book detracts from how cool this page could look.

Everything else in this book is fantastic.  Great layouts.  Great art.  And, while the story may seem a lilttle too straight forward to those into “innovative Grant Morrison”, I think it’s been great so far.  I think Morrison does a fabulous job bringing Joe in and out of the different worlds he inhabits.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. If you’re enjoying the new Vertigo series, Joe the Barbarian by Grant Morrison and Sean Murphy, check out the in-depth interview we did with Sean on the Near Mint Comic Show. It’s a great conversation with lots of insight on the series and Sean’s creative process.
