The Justice League of America

Sounds cool doesnt it? I mean when you see that name you should think ‘spine of the DCU’. It’s a no brainer to have all of your big names in a company and put it in one book. But the harder part of putting together a series like this is that writing seems to challenge a ton of people. I’ll say it right now, I dont see that many great stories or memoriable moments overall when it comes to JLA. Their spin-off series, International, is really the only JLA story I really like….Well that is until I read this gem in an otherwise wave of mud.

Why is this certain JLA run so good? Two Words: Grant Morrison. It was him that made this series go back to the golden standard. He knew how to write the stories, and he definitely knew how to write these characters. When I read one of his stories I can sense how strong Wonder Woman is. Or how big of a leader Superman is. Not just in this deluxe edition (which collects the first 2 volumes of the overall run) but in all the arcs that came from this run is just perfect. Now I know Morrison didnt do all of this, writers like Waid, Johns, Busiek, and others made this as great as it is. But it’s the overall vision of Morrison that made this series worked.

It helps that the art stayed consistantly good through out. The art has that extreme 90’s look, and it stayed looking that pretty much until the mid 00’s. But still it works for the book, it’s trying to be a big action peice and that type of style is perfect for this run. There’s great detail and overall the artists that worked on this made some of the best looking characters around. When I think of Batman, most of the time I think of this JLA Batman.

So yes, there is no reason for you not to have this series. If it’s in a Deluxe format, TPB format, or just old issues you find in bargin bins….JUST BUY IT! I’m sure your library as this too, for some reason a lot of libraries I go to have all the regular volumes of this series. But if you want to see why Morrison is a good writer, and not seeing a bunch of confusing story plots that dont make any sense….You can have this right here. Shame that JLA has not stayed this consistantly good since Morrison and others left the series.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
