Good issue.  I jumped back on Iron Man with #7 (mostly for Spidey) but this new direction intrigues me.  The story itself and characterization is great, but I really can’t say I dig it when Larocca draws talking heads.  His tech drawings are FANTASTIC, and I’ve seen other work by him (ASM for instance) where sure, there are the occasional off moments, but averages out quite well.  I read this issue (completely having forgotten who did the art on the title) and was blown away when I read his name.  I feel for artists when they get slagged on the internet for the hard work they do (hell, I can’t draw worth a damn and I’m sure that’s true for the vast majority of the online critics) and I recognize that his strenghs lie in other areas; he really is a good match for this book.  I’ve seen great pencils from him (tech and faces), so I’m inclined to think it was something else.  The overall painted feeling didn’t help, and maybe the book was rushed.  I’ll definitely stay on (the writing is fantastic) and I’ve enjoyed the art on previous issues. Hopefully we’ll get to see more tech in the coming issues, as that’s where Larocca REALLY kicks ass.

  1. I think you’re correct. I imagine he got put on this title for his skills drawing tech. He’s also pretty good with architecture. I’m thinking maybe he want to play to those strengths and rushes the other stuff. But when you think about it, the story happens to the people, not the machinery or the buildings.

If the art was handled by a well-rounded artist this book would be high quality. For me though, the art is really weighing the whole experience down.
