Since its inception, the hallmark of “The Incredible Hercules” has been its wit, which has made use of a lot of subtle irony, sarcasm and situational humor. For instance, a classic moment was when Hera, a few issues back, deadpanned that one of the greatest contributions of Greek culture to civilization was the Greek diner. (For those of you who live in areas without a substantial Greek community, Greek diners tend less toward haute cuisine and more towards greasy spoons. In other words, Greek diners are not on a par with democracy, drama and the concept of citizenship as pillars of Western Civilization.) Portraying the antechamber to the afterlife as a casino was droll humor.
This issue takes a totally different tact in that it showcases physical humor, all of which is vibrantly illustrated by the art team. This is a nice change of pace, although I would be disappointed if this title made a permanent move away from its verbal and symbolic subtlety. Pak and Van Lente are experimenting, which is fine. The recent couple of issues that featured Amadeus Cho were also different in a Warren Ellis, sci fi kind of way. I was a little disappointed that the villain, Malekith is given short shrift in this issue, but I liked the broadening of the relationship between Thor and Hercules. It appears that Thor and Herc are mutual admirers, and feel a sense of kinship because they both have overbearing fathers. Thor and Hercules are like “brothers from different pantheons.” I would love to see the friendship between Thor and Hercules expanded upon further, perhaps in a miniseries. The two could take on some major menace that could only be defeated by two gods wielding enchanted weaponry.
