Each issue of “The Incredible Hercules” has been like a little piece of geek heaven. I think many comic book geeks are also fascinated by mythologies, and Pak and Van Lente appear to share this fascination and/or they are willing to do quite a bit of research. I enjoy the little bits of mythological lore that they sprinkle in to each story, and in this issue they are crossing Greek and Norse mythology, so what’s not to love? In this installment, Hercules regains his mythological mace, which we learn is perhaps a more formidable weapon than we had known, due to its magical nature. Another marvelous aspect of the Pak/Van Lente style is that they manage to work in a great deal of clever meta commentary without breaking the flow of the story. The scene where kid Zeus asks whether the wickedest queens are always the most attractive is brilliant. Of course! Comic villainesses are always sexy! Hercules’ recounting of Thor’s origin succeeds on at least two levels. First, it shows that Herc is a little jealous of Marvel’s most popular deity hero, although Pak and Van Lente are doing their best to make Herc Marvel’s top god. Second, Hercules’ commentary is spot on. He indentifies the logical holes in the story of Thor’s origin. Since logic is one of ancient Greece’s gifts to the world, it makes sense that a Greek god would point out the illogic in some comic book storytelling. The art is whimsical and cartoony, which fits the tone of the writing well.
