I did it. I picked it up. Everyone said it was good, and I picked it up. I’d resisted for a fairly long time mostly because Hercules has always been a fairly dumb character, better known for his pomp than his power. And also because, well, who needs another book? I mean really, there’s a recession on, do I have the resources to follow the adventures of some bearded B-lister wrapped in green straps of leather as he attempts to plod through the deep and recently uninteresting footsteps of the Hulk? I mean, c’mon–it’s freaking Hercules, who cares? Yeah, well, now I do. Because this was good. It was really good. The funny was funny, the twist was twisty, and all those myths were, well, pretty damn mythic. It read like Simonson’s Thor crossed with Peter David’s Hulk–two of my favorite runs in comic history. In this issue, to save the nine worlds from the usual evil hoards, Hercules decides to disguise himself as Thor and then sets off for battle in Asgard. The issue provides some classic laugh-out-loud marvel moments as the two conflicting mythologies–Greek and Norse–are thrown hastily together, with the characters born of each asserting the supremacy of their own chosen dead religion. All in all a good read that I was glad I’d picked up. Except now I have to pick up the next one. And probably the next after that. By the Gods, damn you Hercules! And, by similar but perhaps not the same Gods, damn you Ifanboy community for suggesting such a damn fine book!
