For the first time ever, when reading this book, I yawned.  And it wasn’t that type of “Gee, I’m tired yawn.”  It was a “this book is so boring, I’m yawning.”  As some may remember, my review of the last issue sung of nothing but praise for the book.  I expunged about how brilliant the God Squad was, and how much fun it will be to see a Secret Invasion tie-in that may have some merit.  I was genuinely excited.  And then, I read this and watched as Greg Pak took all of the wind out of this title’s sails in one foul swoop.

Actually, that’s probably overly harsh.  But not compared to what I thought this issue should be.  After leaving to conquer the Skrull gods, I was expecting some epic Skrull Gods vs. Human Gods battles.  Instead, the entire story revolves around three focal points:

1. Amedeus Cho is completely out of his league, and thus, completely uninteresting now.

2. Gods talk.  Alot.

3.  Hercules is wise in the ways of trickery, which has been proven throughout his tenure in this title.

So, what this issue boils down to is a lot of talking.  And while the parts about the fears that these gods harbor is interesting from a character development perspective,  I couldn’t help but constantly wonder, “What is the point of this and why aren’t we destroying Skrull gods yet?”

This storyline has me a little worried for one reason alone.  I fear that instead of being a giant fight fest with some fun character moments, Pak, instead, is going to take a while to get to the serious fighting and then, somehow, try to throw in detailed Skrull god explanations.  Ugh.  I hope that doesn’t happen.  But what Pak needs to do, for me at least, is get to kicking some Skrull god ass, pronto!
