So far Mark Waid has showed his chops with Irredeemable. A fantastic look at what would happen if a Superman-like character went absolutely insane. But what if we tried to do it the other way around? What if a big time supervillain wanted to become a hero? Mark Waid tries to strike lighting twice with a new series in the same universe as Irredeemable with: Incorruptible.

For the most part, I really enjoyed this series. It isn’t as suspense driven or tightly focused as Irredeemable, but Waid sets the status quo up real well. Max Damage is a bit of a one note character, but I do like the idea of trying to see a supervillain turn his life around. With the flashbacks we get to see just how horrible of a person he really was. I mean for god sakes, his partner in crime/lover is an underage girl! Once we get the ball rolling though, we do some nice changes in Damage’s persona and his reasoning to become a hero is pretty thought out. Although if this does take place in the Irredeemable universe (and Waid doesn’t hold back to show that it does), why hasn’t the Plutionan killed Damage yet? You’d think he would get right on his case early on.

Jesus Daiz is a pretty decent artist, but he is the weak link in this series so far. Krause was able to improve overtime and I was getting used to his art. Here though, there are some pages that look very rushed or sketchy. Characters can get quite off model sometimes and sometimes the action is a bit unclear. When we get towards the latter part of this trade, I could sense Daiz was trying to change for the better. But while Krause changed for the better quickly; I sense Daiz’s art will still not look as good with the second trade.

So far I am enjoying this universe Waid has created. Irredeemable is a fun right while Incorruptible has had a shaky start, but still has rooms of improvement. The characters are there and hopefully the art gets better. Not sure if I can fully recommend it to people; but if volume two is any kind of improvement; I think we got ourselves another solid hit by Mr. Waid.
