So, apparently, the secret ingredient is pulp.

Incognito is a bit like Wanted in reverse.  Our main character is Zack Andersen, a cubicle monkey working at a faceless office building.  He has no friends.  He has a passive-aggressive interest with the pseudo hot witch from accounting.  He really has no ties to anything beyond himself.  He’s also formerly Zack Overkill, an immoral supervillain mercenary responsible for countless deaths who fell off the map and into the Witness Protection Agency.   Zack’s handler, Carnicki. is retiring.  Carnicki’s an alright guy.  Carnicki’s replacement, Kelvin, is decidedly less so.  As such, Zack is looking back on his years as a villain with more than a little nostalgia.  If you’re worried about spoilers, don’t worry; this isn’t anything Brubaker hasn’t said before in interviews.

As always, Brubaker and Philips knock it out of the park.  If the Bru knows how to do anything, it’s how to write intrestingly flawed characters with conflicting moral fibers.  You can see the frustration and cynicism of Zack in regards to his current life as clear as day.  You can see how trapped he feels in his everyday life and how much he hates it.  Still, Zack seems to have some sort of ember of humanity within him or he wouldn’t have gone into Witness Protection in the first place (I don’t buy he had no choice… he’s a supervillain, he’ll escape more times than Houdini).  The fact that his first “villain” act is basically a Batman move seems to show he’s at least not Joker-level evil.  Still, this looks to be a good setup to another gritty pulp adventure clock full of bad guys, broads, and blood from the makers of Sleeper and Criminal.

And if you were worried the essays of Criminal would disappear… ta-da!!!  They’re here.  This one is an article on pulp action hero The Shadow.  Basically, if you’ve been a fan of Brubaker’s stuff with Philips, or want to jump into their work or if you like crime comics or if you like comics in general or are looking into the concept of being entertained by good stories costing less than ya trip to Wendy’s, Incognito is your answer.
